Initially, Michael and Woo started up Retro Reviews (then Smallville Retro Reviews) because they didn’t want to let go of Smallville, however, they soon realized the potential of covering more and more topics as time went on, including Power Rangers, Scooby-Doo, Supernatural, and much more. After over 30 episodes of the Retro Reviews Podcast, the Dynamic Duo decided to pull a DC Comics and reboot the show “New 52” style by changing the title, the mission statement, the logo, and resetting the numbering! Welcome to the next big thing that’s coming to podcasting, because guess what time it is? It’s Tangent Time!

Dan Schmidt (1987-2016) was a huge fan of the Fantasy/Sci-Fi genre in all forms of Media ever since he saw E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial for the first time at age four. Dan’s greatest passion within this realm of fiction was for Superheroes which began with his first Batman action figure and just grew from there. Eventually after hours of watching Batman The Animated Series, exposure to the Internet, the premiere of Smallville on The WB and seeing the first Spider-Man on the big screen, Dan decided to become a Screen/Comic Book Writer. Dan graduated from Columbia College in Chicago with a degree in Film/TV Screenwriting and planed to use Across The Airwaves along with the Graphic Novel he wrote as a stepping stone towards helping others, especially those with physical limitations, looking a job in the Entertainment Industry.

Nico is an avid TV and Film viewer and has been for 25+ years. He regularly watches 4-5 hours of television a night and 1-2 films a week. While he has very little formal training in the film and television industry, only 2 courses in college one in film and the other in television, he has watched nearly 2000 films and 500 seasons of television (according to Netflix) and supposedly has spent about 2 years, 6 months, 18 days, and 6 hours watching TV shows. To get an idea of his TV and film personality, his favorite TV series of all time is Firefly and his Top 5 films are Star Wars (and Empire Strikes Back), Godfather (I & II), Shawshank Redemption, Indiana Jones (Raiders & Last Crusade), and Back to the Future (entire trilogy) . These films and film franchises are the films that have had the most impact on his interest in film.
Nico met Dan in the summer of 2003 at Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Summer Camp at Camp Duncan in Northern Illinois. Nico and Dan became fast friends because it was both of their first years, first year ever for Nico and the first year Dan was assigned to the older boy’s cabin, the Duncan House. Over the next 7 years, their friendship grew as they both continued to attend MDA Summer Camp each summer. Despite being assigned to separate cabins on multiple occasions, they continued to be great camp friends and finally in 2007 they were again reunited in the Oldest Boys Cabin. From that point on, Dan & Nico have maintained a friendship outside of camp. They have kept in regular contact, usually having regular weekly telephone conversations about life, television, films, comic books, and girls… lots of conversations about girls. Out of those conversations about film and television sprang the idea of the Across the Airwaves podcast.

Michael J. Petty has always been into science fiction, comic books, and superheroes. As a kid, he watched the New Batman/Superman Adventures and Batman Beyond on Cartoon Network’s Toonami, all because Dan & Joey Schmidt got him into Batman, his whole world started to change. Later, in the beginning of 2007, the Justice League of America made their first appearance on the television series called Smallville in the episode entitled “Justice”. He watched the episode and he got hooked and started to watch all kinds of television dramas including Supernatural, Chuck, Heroes, and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Films like Super 8, The Dark Knight, How The Grinch Stole Christmas, and Van Helsing revealed to him all of the possibilities he could have in the entertainment industry. He then decided that he would like to write comic books, film, and television for the rest of his life.
