Michael’s Coverage of Alphas: Season 2 (So Far)!

Hey guys! I know that while listening to the DC Nation Podcast (hosted by Dan & myself) a fan and listener of ATA (Jason A.) asked if we were going to be covering the big summer shows including Falling Skies, Alphas, Warehouse 13, Burn Notice, and White Collar, and Dan answered that on the last DC Nation episode (Week 22). Basically, Alphas & Warehouse 13 (since they are shows that take place in the same universe) will be covered in ATA Episode 86, where Dan & Nico will cover those shows. I’m not going be on that episode (hence, why I’m writing my Alphas reviews), but I will be on Episode 87 where we cover the entire 2nd season of Falling Skies, one of the most epic and patriotic television series that I’ve ever seen since Jericho! I’m not sure what they’re doing about White Collar and Burn Notice because I just don’t watch those shows, well, I’ve seen episodes, but I’m not a dedicated fan… Anyways! I’m here to talk about Alphas with you guys, because I am LOVING Alphas and I want to talk about it!

Alphas ended it’s first season with a big cliff-hanger. A Vandal Savage/Ra’s Al Ghul wannabe named “Stanton Parish” had played Team Rosen by conning Dr. Lee Rosen (David Strathairn) into revealing to the world on national television that Alphas are real and they do exist. Rosen was taken to prison (the psych ward actually) and Team Rosen was left to fend for themselves. Nina and Hicks broke up. Rachel left. Nina left. Gary went to join the NSA. Harken and Hicks stayed with the team and we’re pretty much an “Alphas Task Force” to put the bad alphas in Binghamton. Now, jump forward 8 months. When a riot at Binghamton starts, the government calls upon the one man who can help the situation, Dr. Lee Rosen. As Bill and a prisoner Gary (he was put in prison because of his “bad attitude”) stay locked up, Rosen talks down the riot, but not realizing that all they’re doing is stalling for a bomb. Almost all of the inmates escape and in order to to catch them, the government re-instates Team Rosen, with Rosen in charge and Bill, Gary, Rachel, and Hicks back on the team, as Nina refuses. But all’s well that ends well? Not really, as it was Stanton Perish who planned all of this, and him, with a group of Red Flag operatives, blow up a cargo train to make a statement.

Now, I am not going to go through every episode (because I’m assuming you all have watched them), so from now on, here are my thoughts on what else has happened so far…

I am really enjoying the Stanton Parish/Lee Rosen rivalry. Parish is a lot like a combination of Vandal Savage and Ra’s Al Ghul from the DC Comics Universe, which is really cool for me. I really enjoyed the scene where Rosen and Parish are in the cafe. There was just so much there. We originally thought Red Flag wanted Rosen dead, but it looks like Parish wants to use him for something, what I don’t know… As for Gary, well, ever since he got out of the “Alphas prison”, he’s been waking up every morning just screaming because of the stress of Anna dying, Red Flag, Rosen being locked up, and him having a chip in his head. Solution: “I’m moving out, I’m going to live in my office”. I totally laughed my head off! I could see how it was hurting Gary’s mom, but I thought it was great. Also, Gary waking up late that one morning and running around the office in a bath towel… BRILLIANT!!! Now, onto Rachel and John Bennett. I like Rachel. She’s sweet, innocent, caring, she’s everything that the majority of the world isn’t. I also like John Bennett. He seems like a likable kind of guy. I also like them together. HOWEVER! I think John will die before the seasons end. As we’ve seen with Hicks, Gary, and Nina, Alphas aren’t suppose to get what they want (don’t worry, I think Bill’s wife will die too), a lot like in the MARVEL Comics universe with Mutants (mainly the X-Men). And when Nina used her ability on Rachel and they made-out… I’ll be honest, it kinda creeped me out. I completely understand Rachel’s reasoning to them no longer being friends.

Now onto Bill. He’s going to get in a lot of trouble in that fight club, and I also think that, somehow, Parish is going to recruit him to Red Flag (or whatever they’re calling it now), willingly or not (the wife could come into play here…). I really like his interaction with Kat, another character I really enjoy. Mostly when there’s a blond girl named Cat I have a problem with her (there’s a Smallville reference for you), but in this case, Kat is awesome! I hope her memories keep coming back… As for Nina, I still don’t know if I like her anymore, but she’s definitely on her “Tess Mercer road-to-redemption”. And finally Cameron Hicks. Hicks missing his shots in the premiere worries me, what also worries me is that he may not be able to see his son anymore. Hicks was what got me hooked with this show back in the Pilot (well, it was really him, Rosen, and Gary, but he was a big part of it…) and I love how much we’ve seen him grow. However, like I’m predicting with Bill, he’ll have to choose whether his loyalties lie with Team Rosen or Red Flag, as he is dating an agent of Parish.

There’s a lot going on with SyFy’s Alphas right now, in fact there are still talks of a cross-over between Alphas and Warehouse 13 (which would be AWESOME), and I won’t be here to talk about the whole thing, but let’s see if any of my predictions come true and then I may be back (I probably will be regardless, but that’s incentive). Thanks guys for listening to my rants and keep watching Alphas! Because people don’t understand, people like me!
