Good evening. I'm a commercial fisherman here on Andros, been doing it my whole life, learned from my father. I need to tell you about something I saw out on the water. People here on the island, they've been talking about the Lusca for generations, you know what I mean? This creature that lives in the blue holes. Most folks think it's just a story to keep kids from swimming where they shouldn't. I used to think that too. This happened in 2009. I remember because it was the year my daughter graduated high school, and I'd been thinking about whether the fishing business would still be good enough to support the family. Anyway, that's not important. What matters is what I saw that day out past the reef.
Me and my cousin Thomas, we were out fishing for dorado. Mahi-mahi, some people call them. Beautiful fish, great fighters. We were running the boat maybe three, four miles offshore, in deep water. You got to understand, I know these waters. Been fishing them since I was twelve years old. I know where the blue holes are, I know where the currents run, I know what's normal and what's not. It was mid-morning, sun was getting high. Water was calm, maybe a light chop. Perfect conditions, really. We'd already caught a few smaller ones, thinking about where to try next. That's when Thomas spotted something on the surface up ahead. At first we thought it might be a whale shark. We see them sometimes out here, big gentle things. They don't bother nobody.
So we throttled down, because you don't want to hit a whale shark with your prop. As we got closer, maybe fifty feet away, I could see this thing wasn't moving right for a whale shark. The shape was wrong. The color was wrong. It was this murky grayish-brown color, almost greenish in places. And the way it was sitting at the surface, it didn't look natural. Thomas said, 'What is that?' And I told him I didn't know. We drifted closer, just letting the current bring us in. The engine was still idling, just barely. And that's when I saw the head. I know how this sounds. I know exactly how this sounds. But I'm telling you what I saw. The head was pointed, like a mako shark. You know that sharp nose they have? It looked just like that. Dark on top, lighter underneath.
